in application.html.erb if <div id="side"> has no contents to display when the page loads, should it still have any width?

rake db:create db:schema:load creates tables without id column and migration shows id="false" as it runs
of course, this isn't what i want; how do i run the same command with a switch or argument to use id="true" instead and why this default behavior?
