I suppose you could "vendor" the entire application, which would remove the need to install the entire stack on the server directly. I mean, it would still be installed, it just wouldn't be in the /usr/local/lib tree. Is that what you mean? There's also jRuby, where you pack the entire app into a WAR file or something like that -- nothing I've ever tried myself.
