Ruby on Rails

I am confused on the second call :-

class Foo
def <<(param)
"hi"
end
end
foo = Foo.new
foo.<<(1) # => "hi"

foo << 1 # => "hi" # I didn't use `.` method,then how method `<<` has
been called?
