Ruby on Rails

I tried Kernel#`` but not working `cd` command.

kirti@kirti-Aspire-5733Z:~$ irb --simple-prompt
>> `pwd`
=> "/home/kirti\n"
>> var = `cd 'ruby'`
=> ""
>> var
=> ""
>> `pwd`
=> "/home/kirti\n"
