I am having the same problem. I am on an ubuntu system: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
- the Lucid Lynx . I downloaded and installed ruby 1.9.2, and ruby -v:
ruby 1.9.2p0 (2010-08-18 revision 29036) [i686-linux]

gem -v is 1.3.7.

But when I try to run gem install ...

gem install rails -v 3.0.2
ERROR: Loading command: install (LoadError)
no such file to load -- zlib
ERROR: While executing gem ... (NameError)
uninitialized constant Gem::Commands::InstallCommand

So I downloaded gem1.3.7 and when I run
ruby setup.rb

I get:
