Solved (though I'm not entirely sure why this works):
UtilityDatum.
select("sum(ami_residential)").
where(:utility => u).
group("utility_id").
reorder('').
first
The reorder() prevents the ORDER BY clause from being emitted, so the
generated SQL is valid.
